This is a hilarious, exciting, angsty, and heart-warming book about a group of young adults being silly and dramatic and navigating relationships in a mediaeval setting with royal shenanigans and political schemings. The characters are descended from those in the legends, and there are Arthurian themes running throughout, but they are new characters in a newish world. GWART is neither a straight up nor straight Arthurian legend retelling. I found it SO hard to write a professional and sensible review for GWART because it left me emotionally devastated when I finished it at 4am one morning all I could put into words for ages was “I effing loved this book and I need everyone to read it ”, so here’s that in a slightly longer format. I know we’re only in April but GWART is my favourite book so far this year, and I don’t know if it can be topped. Lex Croucher’s 2022 novel Infamous was one of my favourite new books last year so I was ridiculously excited when I heard they were writing an Arthurian-inspired queer romance called Gwen and Art are Not in Love (I will be referring to it as GWART throughout the review).

I was very lucky to receive an ARC (with a very cool scratch-off cover!!) from Nina Douglas and Bloomsbury in exchange for an honest review! Some light spoilers ahead. I had great fun scratching the heart off. My ARC of Gwen And Art Are Not In Love, courtesy of Nina Douglas and Bloomsbury.
